Editorial essay

Somebody Starts Speaking in the Sun

Sunshine Kiz moves Piper's environment toward the song.

Mustard sunlight breaks into a playful chorus of microphone-shaped silhouettes above a cobalt sea. Original symbolic illustration for Sunshine Kiz.

Once a band finds an atmosphere of its own, it encounters a difficulty that hardly looks like one: everybody likes the atmosphere, so change begins to require an explanation. Piper's Sunshine Kiz can be approached from that position. The official reissue account describes a stronger emphasis on vocals than before, with instrumentals no longer occupying the same central place. This is more than adding a figure to a landscape. A landscape begins to carry the weight of somebody speaking. Space that might accompany ordinary activity can also ask us to attend to a voice.

The production retrospective mentions a change of drum machine and the use of live drums on some tracks. Beside the shift toward vocals, those adjustments suggest exploration beyond the surface of a recognizable brand. A group need not change its name to change its center of gravity. Remaining identifiable does not require every decision to be frozen. For a band associated with sun and breezes, the distinction is especially helpful. Natural imagery can make a style seem like permanently settled weather, while production still involves choices that can be made differently each time.

“Seaside Runner,” “Hidin' in Your Shelter,” and “Boku no Love Song” introduce movement, protection, and a first-person position. Sunshine no longer falls exclusively on an unoccupied view. It lights actions, relationships, and the need to express something. The album can be read as moving from what sort of place is this toward who is doing what here. Environment is not abolished; it acquires a foreground. Nor must the foreground obscure everything behind it. The proportion between the two can become the work's actual subject.

Sunshine Kiz is interesting for this change that need not announce itself as a rupture. Listeners are not required to accept a complete break before allowing the band to develop. Familiar vocabulary remains, but its users have more to say. For anyone treating Piper as an ideal summer background, that offers a useful enlargement. There are choices behind the background, and songs that need not remain behind it forever. Sun can fall on the same chair while its occupant has changed position. Sometimes the significant event is simply that somebody begins to speak.
