“DRIVING MY LOVE” places movement beside the things movement cannot control.
A map can calculate how long arrival will take, but not what arrival will mean. “DRIVING MY LOVE” puts that mismatch inside a relationship of unequal emotional investment. Its female speaker’s initiative cannot purchase an equally definite response from the other person. Her capacity to act and her awareness of an unsatisfactory situation coexist; neither cancels the other. Driving consequently becomes more than an emblem of freedom. A person can control a vehicle while having much less control over the direction of a relationship. Geographical progress and emotional progress refuse to consult the same map.
On Anri’s 1983 Timely!!, this Kadomatsu-written and arranged song is penultimate. Its documented musical organization deserves notice on its own: Jun Sato receives the synthesizer-solo credit, while EVE provide chorus. An electronic instrument is assigned the position of a soloist beside a vocal ensemble. The expressive burden is distributed beyond a single lead voice. That arrangement of roles demonstrates a particular studio-pop possibility: technology need not make bodies disappear, and an individual address can share its route with a larger organization of performers.
Music in this territory is readily handed a photograph of a coastal highway. The photograph is convenient, legible, and unlikely to contain a passenger asking questions. But driving also involves choosing a route, taking responsibility for direction, and discovering that an expansive landscape can surround a very small interior. Being able to move is not being able to determine everything. That mismatch gives the title emotional room. Retain only speed and a handsome distance, and people become accessories to their vehicle. Return attention to them, and a road can become a situation rather than decoration.
Contemporary navigation is increasingly good at reducing uncertainty within a journey. A song can still reserve a place for what remains uncertain. It offers no optimized route and cannot guarantee that a departure will prove worthwhile. Such music need not celebrate impulsiveness to remind us that efficiency and understanding are different achievements. An estimated arrival can be repeatedly updated; knowing another person does not submit to a progress bar. The road continues. Capability and desire travel together, without either automatically acquiring the right to steer the ending.
